New York will become the next state to legalize recreational cannabis in the foreseeable future, according to Governor Cuomo.
There has been speculation that New York may become the next state to legalize recreational cannabis, and now we have a confirmation directly from the governor’s office.
The recently reelected governor made it known to the public that he endorses the end of cannabis prohibition and plans to legalize cannabis in New York.
Four days ago, Cuomo said that he will announce his plan to legalize marijuana, which was made available to the public late on Monday.
Legalization as a part of a bigger effort
The effort to legalize cannabis in New York hasn’t just appeared out of thin air. There’s been a need for a reform for a long time.
But, not just a reform of laws in relation to cannabis—everything that is wrong with the criminal justice system needs a change.
This effort to legalize cannabis is just one of the things that will change for New Yorkers by this very broad criminal justice system reform.
“The fact is, we have had two criminal justice systems: One for the wealthy and well off and one for everyone else,” Cuomo said, “and that’s going to end.”
The governor went back to confirm his announcement on Twitter as well:

He didn’t talk about issues like cannabis tax rates, policing the consumers and sourcing the cannabis, although there is no doubt the state will go over these with the public once the process begins.
The official endorsement of recreational marijuana brings a sign of relief to major areas of New York City.
The criminal justice system reform will mean that the minority residents in New York will be less likely to be searched and detained now that the smell of marijuana won’t be a good enough reason to detain and search people.
“Let’s legalize the adult use of recreational marijuana once and for all,” Cuomo added.
Four years ago Governor Cuomo legalized medical marijuana in the state, and it looks like he’s on his way to becoming the favorite governor ever in New York—if recreational legalization and the criminal justice system reform go as planned, Governor Cuomo may have a good platform to run for a higher office at one point.
