How to Make THC Oil for Medical and Recreational Purposes

Articles and documentaries about cannabis oil and its benefits are filling the media nowadays.

It has become one of the most popular and significant ways of consuming cannabis, primarily for medical purposes.

Why significant? Well, because it has changed the way people view the plant, removing some of the stigma around it.

It has opened many possibilities for curing cancer, particularly its most abundant compound, TCH, and it has created a revolution in marijuana community all across the globe.

With such great medical potential, it is only natural that people will start wondering how to make THC oil on their own.

What is cannabis oil

Cannabis oils are concentrates of the marijuana plant.

They are created by extracting cannabinoids from the plant, usually THC and CBD.

There are many types of cannabis extraction, such as alcohol extraction, CO2 extraction, solvent-free extraction etc. The end result – cannabis oil – is something you can purchase in any dispensary store.

The types of cannabis oil are CBD oil, THC oil, hemp oil which is extracted from hemp seeds, etc.

Hemp oil is rich in Omega 3 and Omega 6 fats, but contains no CBD or THC.

CBD oil is made from fiber hemp, and contains very little or now THC.

It is a compound oil that contains mostly CBD, and you can legally buy it anywhere in the U.S. and many other countries around the world, as long as it has less than 0.3 % THC.

And last but not least, the oil we’ll focus on in this article is: THC oil, or marijuana oil, or cannabis oil.

All of these names mean the same – oil that is made from the resin of the female marijuana plant.

Since it is not yet legal to buy in many places, we are going to show you how to make one at home, so stay tuned.

Make your own THC oil in the comfort of your home

You can make your THC oil for either medical or vaping purposes, and we are going to help you with both.

Medicinal oil can provide relief to patients suffering from different kinds of cancer, epilepsy, chronic pain, PTSD and a lot more.

THC oil is definitely something you can make on your own, if you follow the instructions carefully. But before you start…

WARNING: The following how-to guide carries certain risks, since one of the substances used for the recipe is alcohol. Make sure you take all the safety precautions and follow the procedure as explained below.

THC oil for medical purposes

Clean and prepare your workspace

When making THC oil at home, you need to make sure you’re working in a safe, clean and open environment.

The space should always be ventilated properly, to have more air flow available.

It’s not bad to have a fire extinguisher at hand, because, as we said, you will be working with alcohol which is highly flammable.

Get all the necessary materials

You will need:

  • 1 ounce (approximately 30 grams) of marijuana (try using the best bud you can find)
  • 1 gallon (approximately 3,5 litres) of high proof alcohol, which you will use as a solvent (find the cleanest one possible, 99% alcohol is the best)

Do not use rubbing alcohol, but only the one for human consumption.

Collect all the tools needed

You will need some additional tools for this process to help you along the way.

Keep in mind that all the tools to be used need to be clean and neat..

You will need:

  • 1 glass or ceramic mixing bowl (don’t use plastic)
  • 1 wooden mixing spoon
  • straining (filtering)  device – it can be a muslin bag, a pair of stockings, or a coffee filter
  • 1 container of your choice for the liquid
  • 1 silicone spatula
  • 1 double boiler or a rice cooker
  • plastic oral syringes
  • some safety gear of your choosing (non latex gloves, oven mitts)

Extracting THC from cannabis

This step seems the easiest, but is the most important.

First pour your cannabis in a glass bowl, and then pour alcohol over it.

Continue to pour until the solvent is 1 cm above the surface of the plant.

Then stir the mixture with a wooden spoon for about 2-3 minutes.

Constant stirring will help absorb THC into the solvent, and it will make the weed softer, releasing its cannabinoids.

After that just pour the mixture into the second container (for the liquid), while using your straining (filtering) device over it.

Don’t rush this step and slowly pour, letting your liquid fill the second container.

Repeat this whole process. Why? Because the first wash will give you 70-80% of resin, and the second wash will give you the rest of THC.

When you’ve repeated all the steps, just add this mix into your green liquid from the first wash.

It is not recommended to do a third was, two are absolutely enough.

Preparing and storing your oil

When you’re done retrieving your cannabinoids from the plant, now it’s time to boil off the solvent (alcohol) from your mix.

The best way to do so (and the easiest) is to do a double boiler:

  1. Fill the bottom dish with hot water.
  2. Pour the green liquid into the top dish.
  3. Put your water to boil, and wait until the alcohol in the top dish starts to evaporate (the pot will be bubbling).
  4. Then turn the burner off, and wait until the last bubble shows.
  5. Give it another 15 minutes to make sure all the alcohol is gone, and occasionally stir with your silicone spatula this time.

It’s better to do this step with a silicone spatula, because it gets less sticky.

By now, your content should be a thick dark green syrup.

All the alcohol evaporated and you are left with your home-made THC oil.

Now that the process is complete, remove the top dish with your green oil and let it cool down for about an hour.

As it cools down, it will thicken even more.

Fill syringes with your oil

This step is optional, but we recommend that you store your oil in plastic syringes for easier use.

Slowly draw the oil into the syringe by pulling the plunger up.

If you have extra oil and no more available syringes, you may store the rest of your oil in any glass airtight container.

If you store it in the fridge, it can last for at least 6 months.

The dosage we used for this medicinal oil of 1 ounce can produce 2-6 grams of oil.

This type of oil is meant only for medical purposes.

How to use your medicinal THC oil

There are a lot of options when it comes to choosing a method of THC oil consumption.

While the oil doesn’t work as fast as smoking or vaping, you’ll feel its effects more quickly than with edibles.

The most effective way of consuming marijuana oil is sublingually, where the oil is placed under the tongue with a dropper.

This way the THC is absorbed by tongue receptors, and goes directly to the bloodstream.

It takes about 15 to 30 minutes for the compound to kick in.

As for the dosage, it depends from person to person.

Start with a few drops and see how this works for you, then slowly increase the dose until you experience the effect that suits you best.

THC oil for vaping

The process of making oil for your vaporizer is a little different than the medicinal oil recipe.

You will need 2 glass jars for this, and make sure you put them in the fridge first.

Then decarb your weed.

We already talked a lot about decarboxylation, so to keep it simple: you need to bake your weed.

First grind it well, then place it on a baking sheet and put it in the oven for about 30 minutes.

When this step is done, and you’ve removed your weed from the oven, grab a jar from the fridge.

Put the weed in the jar and pour alcohol over it.

Place the mix in the fridge for a few minutes, for THC to settle a bit.

Now take the jar with your mixture and pour its content into the second jar, which you previously covered with a cheesecloth.

To purify the extract you need to let the alcohol evaporate, like we did in the first tutorial.

This time, you will put your jar of green liquid into the pot filled with water, and let it boil.

And now comes a very important part which makes all the difference.

You need to add PEG (polyethylene glycol)  to your THC oil.

This will make the consistency thicker, so that you can use it in your vaporizer as a concentrate.

You will need at least a millimeter of PEG to make a gram of your concentrate into a vape juice of your choice.

Mix the PEG and THC oil together by adding the doses you prefer and are comfortable with to dropper bottles and just shake them up.

Conclusion

Whether you are going to use your oil as a pain reliever or to relax, vape it or use it in an edible, it’s up to you.

Though THC is still being studied for its many benefits on human health, it’s already widely in use as a natural alternative for pain relief.

So whether you want to use it as a pain reliever or to relax, vape it or use it in an edible, we hope these tutorials will come in handy.

Of course, if you don’t feel like experimenting in the kitchen, you can try buying one from your local dispensary store, if cannabis is legal in your area.

Just make sure you don’t exceed the needed dosage, and use your THC oil responsibly.
